The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Walk is a 24.6-mile walk from Horton in Ribblesdale in the Yorkshire Dales that passes over the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres), Whernside (736 metres), and Ingleborough (724 metres), and includes an overall elevation gain of 1,610 metres.
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge involves completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk in under 12 hours. Not everyone wants to or should rush through in one day. A popular alternative is to spread the Yorkshire Three Peaks over a longer period - for example, one peak per day over a long weekend, or one peak on each of three separate weekends.
There's no rule that you must do them back-to-back. Taking them on in a relaxed way allows you to enjoy the experience and scenery at each mountain and recover fully between climbs.
If you're thinking about tackling the iconic Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk, our Walk section is the perfect place to start. It includes a full video of the entire route, providing a realistic sense of the terrain, scenery, and challenges ahead. It's ideal for determining whether it's the right challenge for you or for familiarising yourself with the route.
You'll also find a detailed written walk description, the whole route marked on an interactive OS map, a hill profile, a free GPX download of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks route, and over 70 photographs taken along the way to help you visualise what to expect at each stage.
You'll also find a wealth of practical information on training plans, FAQs, route logistics, advice for Support Crews, and a comprehensive kit list to help you prepare for the big day.
But the Yorkshire Dales offers far more than just the Three Peaks.
Our Yorkshire Dales Walker's Guide explores other incredible walking routes and remarkable geological features throughout the area - perfect for extending your trip or planning your next adventure.
Of course, no visit to the Dales is complete without soaking in the charm of its villages and market towns. Each one has its own unique character, rich history, and friendly atmosphere. Our Towns and Villages section highlights the best spots to discover, whether you're after a cosy pub, a local tearoom, or just a picturesque wander through cobbled streets.
Want to dive deeper into the peaks themselves? We have dedicated pages on Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, covering everything from their geological origins and name meanings to the major paths that cross their slopes.
